The XFL played professional football in 2001 with several ties to WWE (then WWF) wrestling. It included Dick Butkus, Jesse Ventura and others as announcers. It had players such as Rod Smart (aka "He Hate Me"), Steelers quarterback Tommy Maddox, and the league encouraged players to come up with nicknames on the backs of their jerseys instead of just last names.
It had rules about punting over 25 yards, no fair catches, a "scramble" for the football instead of an opening coin toss, 2 point conversions, camera angles which later on became incorporated into current NFL broadcasts and much more. In 2001 it existed against Arena Football, the CFL, AF2, IPFL and more.
